Meet the Kilns

Meet Lindy, Matilda, and Trixie,

the Large, Medium and Tiny kilns in the MHC Studio!

Lindy the Kiln

In the studio I fire to Cone 5-6 primarily with Lindy, a newer L&L 28-M kiln. Her name was actually inspired by my grandmother, Linda Lee, an amazing artist and a lifelong source of artistic inspiration and support. As the largest kiln in the studio, Lindy handles the majority of our firings as she’s dependable, consistent and can hold quite a large amount of work. She even reached a big milestone this past winter, her 200th fire in February 2026!

Matilda the Kiln

Matilda is a mid-90’s Duncan kiln-sitter kiln that I purchased back in 2015. Why did we name her Matilda? Because she’s an old classic, a little magical, a little quirky, and each firing is a bit of a waltz with her. Matilda is originally a manual fire kiln, but she got a technological update a few years ago with thermocouples and a new computer controller. Now she’s a bit robotic, too, thanks to our resident engineer. She has a hard time making it all the way up to Cone 5, but she’s still dependable for bisque firings.

Trixie the Kiln

Trixie, our second kiln, came to us in 2018 from a dear clay friend to use as a small test kiln. She was a bit of an upgrade from Matilda as she already had a digital controller. But once we were successful with the upgrade on Matilda, Trixie got the “hot rod” treatment herself with stronger heating elements and higher quality thermocouples. Now this little wonder can easily make it all the way up to Cone 10. Lately she’s been firing crystalline glazes for a side project the Kiln Engineer’s been working on. More regularly, she helps us out when a small batch of pieces need to be bisqued or glazed.
